  7. ISTAR KNOWLEDGE SERVER

  9. (Note:  At present, in Aminet, Istar in dev/misc
  10. and KnowledgeServer in comm/tcp, are the same program.  
  11. But in future they might diverge and have different 
  12. capabilities or packagings.)

  14. Istar is a knowledge based system builder that allows you to construct
  15. inference nets, bayesian nets and semantic nets.  It has a particularly
  16. nice user interface, with a smoothness that only Amiga hardware can give.
  17. So it is useful for decision support, to help you clarify complex ideas.
  18.  
  19. Version 1.1 has Knowledge Server capability.  That is, knowledge bases
  20. created by Istar can be run over the Internet, worldwide.
  21. (Note:  If you have a version of Istar1.1 that has a date on or before
  22. 6th October 1999, then you will find some tracing text that appears
  23. on the console when running in server mode.  This was detected, and
  24. removed on 7th October 1999.  The tracing merely shows stack usage,
  25. and is interesting: around 1k at that point - though best to keep
  26. stack high (20000) for other things.)

  28. You build your knowledge base by drawing boxes and arrows, and then
  29. can run the KB either direct or via a browser.

  43. A number of other changes have been made, bugs fixed,
  44. etc. to the main Istar since version 1.092.
  45.  
  46. But the major change is that Version 1.1 has been made into
  47. a knowledge server.  That is, Istar can converse with a
  48. distant browser.
  49.  
  50. In addition to a standard local user interface for the run-time user,
  51. there is also an interface to HTTP.  Though the modular nature
  52. of Istar made it easy to get an initial version working, the
  53. inference engine required an overhaul before it could support
  54. multi-user access.

  56. Version 1.092 introduces reset values, which allows you to specify
  57. a default value to which an attribute will be set when a question is
  58. asked (previously it showed the value left there from previous
  59. working.  See history.html).  A few enforcer hits had been found
  60. and these have been fixed; see bugs.html.  Help buttons are now
  61. available on forms.

  75. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  76.  
  77. Known to work on Amiga 1200, 3000, 4000.  Will just about run in
  78. 2Mb machines, but recommend use the IstarPrefs_LowMem as your
  79. preferences file.

  81. Assigns needed (can work without them):
  82.     IstarSys: (has IstarPrefs and, in future, other things)
  83.     KBTools: where KBs are saved etc.
  84. Fonts used (unless specified in IstarPrefs):
  85.     Courier
  86.     Garnet
  87.     Topaz
  88. Libs used:
  89.     iff.library (but can work without it)
  90. Stack usage:  20,000 recommended, but real usage unknown.
  91.     Surprisingly small, but once ran out when the standard 4k.

  93. It works best if you assign KBTools: to the directory where you keep
  94. your knowledge bases, and IstarSys: to a directory where various system
  95. files are kept.  At present, the only file sought in IstarSys is IstarPrefs.
  96. Otherwise just starts as Sys: root.

  114. Istar is still under development.  Some of its buttons do not work
  115. because they are not attached to anything yet.  Some of its more
  116. exotic data transformations do not yet work.  See bugs.html.
